The Japan Rail passes are available to travellers visiting Japan with tourist (temporary visitor) visas. A Japan Rail Pass Exchange Order MUST be purchased outside Japan, prior to your trip.

About Japan Rail Pass

There are 5 types of Japan Rail Pass
This pass covers the entire Japan Railway JR system including some buses and ferries. You are able to travel everywhere in Japan with this Japan Rail pass. It comes in 7, 14 and 21 consecutive days. Each of these Japan Rail passes is available in Economy (Ordinary) and Green (First) Class.
Please note that the Japan Rail Pass can only be purchased outside of Japan.

| This pass covers the Eastern half of Japan’s main island, Honshu. The pass is available in 5 and 10 consecutive days and a flexible 4 day pass. These passes are available in Economy and Green Class. The economy pass is also available is a Youth Pass for travellers between 12 and 25 years of age.

| There are two types of JR West Rail Pass. The Sanyo Pass is valid from Osaka to Hakata, available in 4 and 8 days. The Kansai Pass is valid from Kyoto to Himeji and available in 1,2,3 and 4 days. These passes are available in Economy only. |

Who is eligible for Japan Rail Pass?
If you are a tourist visiting Japan from abroad for sightseeing:
You must be visiting Japan under the entry status of “Temporary visitor” according to Japan Immigration Law.
When you enter Japan for sightseeing, entry personnel will stamp the passport as “temporary visitor”. Only a person who has a passport bearing this stamp can use a JAPAN RAIL PASS. Please note that according to strict interpretation of the Japanese Immigration Law, “temporary visitor” status differs even from other types of stays that also for only short time periods.
The Embassy of Japan and Consulates General of Japan in Australia
If you are a Japanese national living in a foreign country:
You must
a) be qualified to live permanently in that country; or
b) be married to a non-Japanese residing in a country other than Japan.
Note:
Australian residents tarvelling on a Japanese passport are not allowed to purchase JR Hokkaido, East, West or Kyushu Rail passes.
How to receive Japan Rail Pass?
You will receive Japan Rail Pass Exchange Order to be turned in for JAPAN RAIL PASS. Within three months from the date the Japan Rail Pass Exchange Order was issued, you must turn in your Japan Rail Pass Exchange Order to obtain JAPAN RAIL PASS.
At the time, it is necessary to specify the date that you want to start using the Japn Rail Pass. It can be any date within one month from the date the Japan Rail Pass is received. Once the JAPAN RAIL PASS has a starting date written on it, the date cannot be changed.
How long Japan Rail Pass valid?
The valid period of a JAPAN RAIL PASS is the consecutive 7, 14 or 21 days beginning of the PASS is first used.
Is Japan Rail Pass Exchange Order delivered to me?
Yes, JTB delivers Japan Rail Pass Exchange Order by an Express post or by a courier (special delivery or less than 5 working days. No PO Box address apply) with delivery fees of $4.50, $20.00 respectively. JTB can not take responsibility if Japan Rail Pass Exchange Order is lost or stolen. Please request delivery method at the time of purchase.
A $5.00 issue fee applies for Railpass ONLY purchases over the counter. This fee does not apply when purchased online or with other land arrangements purchased from JTB.
Can I change a name on JR Pass Exchange Order?
The change of name on Japan Rail Pass Exchange Order attracts re-issuing fee of $45.
Please make sure that you provide passenger’s full name as shown on passport.
Can I make seat reservation by Japan Rail Pass?
Seat reservations can be made once in Japan at no extra cost.

What can I do with unused JR Pass Exchange Order?
Refund can be made with the original Japan Rail Pass Exchange Order within one year of the date of issue. A handling fee and communication fee will be subtracted from the refund. Currently 20% of the price will be charged as a refund handling fee.
If lost or stolen Japan Rail Pass?
Neither an Japan Rail Pass Exchange Order nor a JAPAN RAIL PASS can be reissued if lost or stolen.
