Onsen Hot Spring
As Japan is a chain of volcanic islands, natural hot springs can be found all over the country. These treasures can be effective in treating injuries and illness as well as relieving fatigue. Experiencing an Onsen is a great way to immerse yourself into Japanese culture. Rotenburo (open air spas) are extremely popular. A must for the cultural connoisseur!
Kusatsu Onsen
Kusatsu is located at the foot of Mt. Shirane in Gunma Prefecture. The city became well known about 120 years ago when German doctor Dr Balz found its hot spring to be very effective. In Kusatsu Onsen, there are eighteen public baths. Each bath has a different effect and a different source. Most of them operate 24 hours a day. From Tokyo travel by Shinkansen to Karuizawa (70 min) then take the Spa Resort Liner coach to Kusatsu (60 min).

| Message from Mayor of Kusatsu |
Kusatsu is a Mecca of traditional Japanese hot-springs, or onsen, which has long offered relaxation and rejuvenation to both Japanese and foreign visitors. We encourage you to make a visit to Kusatsu Onsen part of your Japanese experience -- you will be able to bask in the warm waters of the baths and the warmth of the welcome you will receive.
The 53 million litres of hot spring water that emerges every day from some 100 springs in the town is known for its high temperature at source and its unique curative qualities. The baths in Kusatsu are thought to be effective in lessening the symptoms of ailments such as neuralgia, muscle pain, arthritis, sprains, and chronic fatigue. Taking the hot spring waters in Kusatsu will give a fresh glow to your skin and provide a sense of relaxation and well-being. Kusatsu Onsen provides truly natural therapy.
Kusatsu Onsen has a long history, and the town’s water was so beloved of the first shogun, Ieyasu Tokugawa, in the late sixteenth century that he had barrels of water from the town brought to his castle in Edo (now Tokyo) for his bath. Kusatsu is centrally located and approximately three hours from Tokyo by train. At 1,200 metres above sea level, the town and its environs offer year-round activities. Skiing in winter; hiking and golf in the warmer months. An international music festival is held every summer, offering yet another reason to visit.
The residents of Kusatsu Onsen believe in making guests comfortable and sending them on their way with a renewed vigour and memories of an enjoyable visit.
|
| Our Commitment |
The hot spring waters of Kusatsu Onsen are traditionally thought to cure every malady but a broken heart. Kusatsu’s springs release copious amounts of high-temperature water that has long been used for bathing. The temperature of the water at source (up to 90 ℃ ), combined with its acidity, give the water excellent antibacterial qualities. Kusatsu Onsen is committed to providing the highest quality, natural hot spring water for the bathing pleasure of visitors. |
